Press Release
Pierogi is pleased to present an exhibition of Daniel Davidson’s recent works on paper. “My work is a fusion of hybrid characters, spaces and styles. Focusing on the urges and consequences of actions on a personal as well as social level, for the past few years my work has been about over-consumption. Often employing the comic or the grotesque, my work is a reflection of societal overload, the complexities of modern life, and the excesses and addictions that surround us.” -Daniel Davidson.
In these pieces, Davidson merges pre-existing and improvised images to coalesce in the finished composition. He has consistently been developing works on paper for the past twenty years. They are created by collaging drawings, paint tests, and studio scraps to form a new ground. On this often abstract ground, he adds figurative imagery to complete the drawing.
This will be Davidson’s second one-person exhibition at Pierogi. He received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and his work has been exhibited widely in the US. He is the recipient of a Rome Prize Fellowship, a PS1 National and International Studio Program, and a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Studio Space Program award. His work is included in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Berkeley Art Museum, among others. Davidson currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
